an animal?

Foster a dog or cat

Some of the dogs and cats in our care take a while to find a forever home. Some have ongoing medical conditions, some need socialising, some are old or have injuries.

We rely heavily on the generosity of people who are prepared to offer a temporary home to one (or more) of our animals in our care.

Could you foster a dog or cat?

We need more people willing to open up their homes to dogs and cats looking for a fresh start in life.

When animals are taken into a foster home it must be remembered that this could be for a few days, a few weeks or even months. When a dog or cat has been in a foster home for whatever reason it is unfair to then return that dog or cat to the shelter to have to, once again, adjust to the life there. We prefer that an animal stays in that foster home until it is adopted for life.

When you foster a dog or cat you’ll be freeing up space in our shelter so that we can rescue more animals in desperate need.

Benefits to the animals

Animal fostering is an important role. It plays a vital part in the rehabilitation of animals and helps improve their chances of finding a new home.

Many of the animals we take in either have suffered or are not used to the care and affection they deserve. Living with a foster family helps them to adjust to one-to-one care, allowing them to build up their confidence and get used to a normal lifestyle.

Other animals don͛t cope well in a shelter environment. This is where we need people to take them in to provide them with a real home, even if it is only on a temporary basis.

Benefits to people

Fostering animals can be a really pleasurable and rewarding experience.

There is the satisfaction of knowing you have played a key part in the rehoming process, once a successful ‘forever’ home has been found.

It also provides an alternative option for people who are unable or unwilling to take in an animal on a long-term basis.

Fostering responsibility

All fosterers are responsible for the welfare of the animal in their care.

We will help with the cost of food and medication in appropriate cases. We will provide whatever other practical support may be required.

And we are at the end of the phone if there are any difficulties.
